A federal task force for crypto theft.
On Thursday, two House members introduced a bipartisan bill creating a Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Task Force. Led by the attorney general, it would pull in the DOJ, FBI, Treasury, and Homeland Security, and give victims one place to report stolen funds.
Stolen crypto moves across chains and borders in minutes, while an investigation must cross agencies that each see only their own piece. The bill adds no new tracing tools. It puts one office in charge of the agencies that already have them.
The DOJ ran such a team until 2025, then shut it down. Americans lost about $11 billion to crypto theft last year. The tools to trace the money exist. What has been missing is one body responsible for following it.
