Nvidia and Autonomous Vehicles: AI Moves into Machines

2026-01-10

When self-driving cars began research and discovery in the mid-2010s, the technology was seen as an anomaly. Alphabet's (Google) Waymo and Tesla's early work on FSD were largely criticized and, of course, had their own faults. The two existed pretty independently, and for a long time, the technology felt more experimental than inevitable.

The rise of AI has, obviously, bled into this sector and is becoming more prevalent across robotics. Models are better, compute is cheaper, and there is general confidence in the real-world use.

Nvidia stepping further into this space makes sense in that context. As AI moves beyond software and into machines, the limiting factor becomes the hardware. Nvidia is already one of the primary suppliers of the compute behind modern AI.
