Layer 2s
Layer 2s were created because Layer 1s were slow, expensive, and hard to use at scale. They served as a workaround, not the ultimate goal.
What Vitalik, the founder of Ethereum, is pointing at is that as Layer 1s improve, the need for many L2s naturally diminishes. Fewer layers mean fewer bridges, trust lines, and potential points of failure.
This isn't unique to Ethereum. As a base chain becomes faster, cheaper, and more reliable on its own, blockchain becomes simpler for users and developers.
